Renewal

A renewal is the appointment with your own status: there is a window to file it, and what it takes depends on the category you hold.

Renewal

When you can renew

You can renew up to one month before the document expires, or up to three months after it has expired.

After that window, the category is considered waived.

If your card is about to expire, write to us with the date and we will tell you which documents to start collecting.

Digital nomad visa

A new accountant certificate showing that the required monthly income is still being received.

Medical insurance with at least US$50,000 of coverage for illness in Costa Rica, for the new period.

Proof that you spent at least 180 days in the country during the period.

No social security (Caja) payment is required for this category: the digital nomad visa does not include Caja registration.

For context: temporary residency asks for one day in the country every two years, while the digital nomad renewal looks at the 180-day presence.

Residencies: the substantive element has to still be there

Investor: the investment is still in your name.

Pensionado: the pension is still being paid.

Rentista: the passive income is still arriving.

Married to a Costa Rican: you are still married.

Social security (Caja) up to date. This is required for residency categories, not for the digital nomad visa.

In every case, the documents that prove it have to be current, not the ones from the original file.

Renewals are filed with the DGME. The documents are dated to the new period, not copied from the original file.
